Treat Spot Review #3 - The Ice Cream Project

THE CONCEPT

Photo Credit: The Ice Cream Project

Having already made her mark in the Chelsea area, Anya Hindmarch chanced her arm at a creative ice-cream concept, serving up a vast array of ‘unexpected and delicious ice creams and sorbets which celebrate Anya Hindmarch’s favourite cult food brands’. An assortment of household names usually seen in one’s pantry instead found their place in silver freezers.

Anya’s idea was to test out how people would react to these unique flavourings, and offered the choice of a takeaway scoop or a 500ml tub.

The flavours on offer were the following:

  • Kikkoman Soy Sauce - A delicious toasted sesame ice cream laced with umami-rich naturally brewed soy sauce

  • Heinz Tomato Ketchup - The perfect combination of sweet, salty and tangy flavour

  • PG Tips - An ice cream infused with a great tasting black tea blend. An elegant frozen afternoon pick me up

  • Heinz Mayonnaise - A surprising rich and creamy ice cream with the zestiness of lemon and tang of vinegar

  • HP Sauce - A fruity, aromatic taste with a spicy hit of tamarind and dates

  • Heinz Salad Cream - The ‘original tangy taste’ ice cream with a hint of heat

  • Heinz Baked Beans - A rich, sweet flavoured ice cream brimming with protein. One of your 5 a day

  • Quaker Rolled Oats - A creamy ice cream blended with Quaker’s 100% wholegrain oats with maple syrup for a touch of sweetness

  • Bird’s Custard - A smooth and creamy ice cream whipped with the original homemade taste of Bird’s custard

  • Kellogg’s Coco Pops - A delicious milky chocolate ice cream interspersed with the crunch of Chocolate flavoured toasted rice

  • Kellogg’s Frosties - A rich vanilla ice cream with frosted corn flakes. Made with Tony’s closely guarded secret recipe- it’s gr-r-reat!

  • Lyle’s Golden Syrup - An ice cream with notes of butter, caramel and honey

  • Lea & Perrins - A sweet tomato fruit sorbet with a splash of Worcestershire sauce

  • Polo - A bright, refreshing mint sorbet laced with tiny pieces of smashed Polo

MY TREAT CHOICE

Lyle’s Golden Syrup

I opted for the 500ml tub of golden syrup, one of my favourite childhood delicacies. The butter, caramel and honey flavours shone through, and the ice-cream was not as strong as I initially anticipated. I would have loved some chewy-like golden syrup running through the ice-cream to provide that added texture, but overall it was still delicious.

THE FEE

It was a little on the expensive side, as the hype surrounding this original concept made the queues long, driving up the price. Their ice-cream machine was also not functioning so we could only purchase a tub on this occasion.

THE REVIEW

As the pop-up only remained open until the end of August, it was a must-visit, as I wanted to see whether the quality lived up to the hype. The staff were welcoming, and walking in to the surprise of fridges brimmed with ice-cream was eye-catching and a one-of-a-kind experience. I only wish I could have re-visited to try out the rest of the flavours!

Room for Improvement?

Although it was only a temporary pop-up, I wish they could have implemented a ‘tasting station’ in the shop, so that we could have a little try of each and every one of the creative flavours.
